42 new Volvo B5TL double deck buses for Translink Northern Ireland

Translink, Northern Ireland’s main public transport operator has placed a significant order with Volvo Bus for 42 new Euro B5TL double deck buses with Wrightbus bodywork for delivery later this year.

The new vehicles are destined for use on Translink’s Metro Services operating in the Belfast area.

“We’re pleased to place the order for 42 new Volvo buses which will allow us to maintain high standards terms of quality and comfort or our Belfast customers,” explained Ciaran Doherty Translink General Manager, Bus Services.

“In addition we believe these will be amongst the first vehicles in Northern Ireland to meet the latest Euro VI emission standards making them some of the most fuel efficient and environmentally-friendly buses in the region.   With much lower air quality emissions this is good news for Belfast, helping to improve the overall local air quality and providing a healthier environment for all.

“Together with great value fares, these new buses will allow us to build on our success by attracting even more customers to travel more sustainably and take advantage of the convenience, comfort and cost savings available with local bus travel.”

Volvo’s new diesel engined B5TL double deck bus has been completely re-developed in close co-operation with Volvo’s long-term body building partner, Wrightbus and was officially launched at Coach and Bus Live in 2013.

Specifically developed to offer operators optimal uptime and lifecycle cost savings, Volvo’s new Euro VI B5TL diesel double deck bus delivers various benefits, including significant gross weight savings and improved fuel economy. It also provides reduced maintenance costs and dramatically lower air quality emissions

“Translink will really see the benefits in relation to reduced life cycle costs having invested in the Volvo B5TL,” explained Regional Bus Sales Manager, Dan Barwick. “Our new Euro VI bus product is lighter, quieter and even more fuel efficient than ever before.

“They were keen to upgrade their fleet for their Belfast city centre Metro Services and our new product met with their exacting specifications. We look forward to continuing work with them going forward.”
