Volvo Euro 6 citybus range – the next generation

Coach & Bus Live 2013 at the NEC in Birmingham sees Volvo Bus announce its next generation citybus range of Euro 6 vehicles.

The new Volvo B5TL diesel and B5LH hybrid double deck buses have been completely re-developed over the course of the last three years in close co-operation with Volvo’s long-term body building partner, Wrightbus.

Revised styling has added further appeal to the overall aesthetics and enhanced ergonomics has increased driver and passenger comfort on both vehicles. Responding to customer feedback, both the B5TL diesel and the B5LH hybrid give enhanced levels of component commonality.

Volvo’s new Euro 6 B5TL diesel double deck bus has been specifically developed to offer operators optimal uptime and lifecycle cost savings. Using a smaller engine than the Volvo B9TL model at Euro 5, the new B5TL double deck bus loses nothing in terms of overall performance.

The D5K 4 cylinder engine is rated at 240hp at 1900rpm, with a maximum torque of 918nm at 1200-1600rpm.

Benefits of the new Euro 6 vehicle include a gross weight saving of at least 1,000kg, significant fuel savings, reduced maintenance costs estimated at 10% lower and dramatically lower air quality emissions.

The parallel hybrid version B5LH delivers consistent fuel savings and extremely high reliability. The product provides complete integration of the engine and the hybrid systems, all of which are designed and manufactured by Volvo.

“The new Euro 6 B5 double deck bus range has been developed after extensive consultation with our customers,” explained Phil Owen, Volvo Bus Sales Director. “The feedback highlighted a need for easier access to components for maintenance and wider vehicle repair options to help reduce life cycle cost. All of those requirements have been incorporated in the new range and we have extremely high hopes for our new double deck vehicles.”

Added to Volvo’s existing and popular citybus range in 2012, the new complete Volvo single deck 7900H hybrid bus features a driveline and vehicle layout almost identical to the B5LH hybrid double deck bus. With effect from Euro 6, Volvo Bus will offer only hybrids in full low floor city buses in the UK and Irish market.

“We’ve received particularly successful in-service reports on our 7900H single deck vehicle from operators such as First Group and Lothian Buses,” explained Phil Owen. “The development for Euro 6 will see even further reductions in emissions and equally impressive fuel savings.”

Volvo Bus has also developed the B8RLE single deck for Euro 6 to further build on the success of the B7RLE with bodybuilding partners. The vehicle is highly versatile and will meet the varied needs for operators running intercity and commuter operations.

The new extremely fuel-efficient 8 litre Euro 6 engine, rated at 280hp at 2100rpm, uses selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) technology to reduce operational costs, while Volvo’s high quality ensures superior functionality, passenger comfort and reliability.

It has also been specifically developed with the driver in mind. The precise steering and smooth gear changes combined with the engine torque makes the driver’s working day a lot easier.

“Fuel cost is obviously a crucial factor for operators and with a new 8-litre Euro 6 engine, we fully expect the B8RLE to build on the success of its predecessor, the B7RLE,” explained Phil Owen. “Proven Volvo technology and an extremely durable mechanical design ensure reliability and long service life. In addition when it comes to preventative safety, the road behaviour of the B8RLE is a real asset.”
