Volvo Bus reveals its new engine range for Euro VI

Volvo Bus is introducing its next generation of Euro engines designed to meet the exacting standards of Euro VI legislation, due to come into effect in January 2014 for new registrations.

Three new engines make up the next generation range in 5, 8 and 11 litre configurations, all developed to achieve maximum fuel efficiency while meeting the Euro VI requirements. The first of these new engines to be introduced is the 8 litre Volvo D8, which makes its show debut at Euro Bus Expo 2012.

The new legislation comes into force from 1st January 2014 for all new buses and coaches, all of which must be fitted with engines certified to Euro VI. Compared with Euro V the new legislation means that nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels are cut by 80 per cent and particulate matter (PM) emissions reduced by 66 per cent to just 0.01 g/kWh. Care for the environment is a Volvo core value, and the impact of air quality affects us all.

Replacing the current 7 and 9 litre Euro 5 engines, the Volvo D8 is an in-line, six cylinder engine with common rail fuel injection and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust treatment in combination with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and diesel particulate filter (DPF). The Volvo D8 engine will be available in 280 hp (1060 Nm torque), 320 hp (1200 Nm torque) and 350 hp (1400 Nm torque) options.

“In developing the new engines, we have been able to improve fuel efficiency over virtually all our bus and coach range as well as further reducing noise levels,” explained Ian Downie, Product Director, Volvo Bus UK. “This has been achieved by reducing weight and utilising ‘smart’ systems on the controls and electric systems, including a new alternator.

“SCR is a well established system used throughout Europe and Volvo has been a leading exponent of SCR. The EGR system is operationally proven technology used by Volvo for several years in the USA and Japan and we have subsequently carried out further refinement for the European market. The combination of SCR and EGR has been in series production on Volvo engines for North America since 2010, underlining our experience.”

A more powerful diesel engine will be introduced with the new 5 litre, Volvo D5 delivering 240 hp (900 Nm torque) which will be used in the Volvo hybrid driveline. The new double deck Volvo B5TL, due to be launched in the UK market in autumn 2013, will also feature this new engine. It will provide the bus with significant fuel and weight savings when compared with the current Euro V, Volvo B9TL.

Ideal for the coach range is the new 11 litre, Euro VI, Volvo D11 engine which will be available with three power ratings, these being: 380 hp (1800 Nm torque), 430 hp (2050 Nm torque) and 460 hp (2200 Nm torque). Lighter than the current 13 litre engine, it has been designed to be more economical while offering the same power output and on the road performance.

Fuel economy and reliability

The SCR system, which converts the oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust gases into harmless nitrogen and water vapour, is now integrated with the particulate filter in a compact unit that takes up the minimum possible space. It is the particulate filter that captures and incinerates the microscopic particles found in the exhaust gases and is automatically regenerated during operation. When the engine is not hot enough, EGR is used to raise the exhaust gas temperature to 250˚C so that the emission reduction system operates efficiently.

All the new Euro VI engines have commonality across the entire Volvo truck, bus and coach range, with benefits for the customer in aftermarket support and parts availability. They will be available across the Volvo bus and coach product line up in the second half of 2013.
