The investment in Volvo was a calculated decision by the South Coast company, taking into account a number of important factors, such as fuel efficiency and aftermarket support. “We needed a change and we saw Volvo and the B9TL product as the perfect choice for our current requirements,” explained Adrian Mitchell, Engineering Director, Brighton & Hove Bus Company.

“We’re absolutely delighted with our new vehicles,” he continued. “To date they have been one of the most reliable and enduring buses that we have ever run. The Volvo chassis is robust and proven to be efficient, whilst the Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini 2 bodywork is stylish, well put together and gives a real quality feel to the vehicle”.

The two-axle B9TL is environmentally optimised to Euro 5 standard making it perfectly suited to the urban environment. Its driveline consists of the proven Volvo D9B, 9.4 litre, rear-mounted engine, rated at 260hp connected to the ZF Ecolife gearbox.

Fitted with 14 state-of-the-art onboard CCTV cameras and text-to-voice communication systems, the new buses are well equipped to meet the requirements of the operator and its modern day passengers.

Seating capacity is 43 on the top deck and 28 on the lower, with room for a further 27 standees giving the vehicles the facility and passenger capacity to support the company through even the busiest operational periods. With this in mind, Brighton & Hove have placed their new B9TL buses into immediate service on their popular cross town 6 and 7 routes.

Brighton & Hove’s trademark cream and red livery features a distinctive additional route branding on the new vehicles, designed by Ray Stenning and Best Impressions.

Phil Owen, Volvo Bus Sales Director commented, “Working in close partnership with the Wright Group, we have been able to meet Brighton & Hove’s requirements for new fuel efficient, reliable vehicles to service the company’s popular cross town routes. Volvo makes up about 10% of Brighton & Hove’s entire fleet and we hope that the success of these new B9TL buses will allow us the opportunity to increase that percentage in the future”.
