Volvo’s new 13 litre diesel engine – “the ultimate power pack”

“Volvo’s all-new 13 litre engine is the ultimate power package and powers the driveline of the new 9700 13 metre Prestige Plus coach,” said Volvo Bus Product Director Ian Downie, speaking at this week’s Euro Bus Expo at the NEC, Birmingham.

Designated the D13C, the engine is an in-line 6-cylinder diesel rated in a choice of either 420 or 460 bhp with a Euro 5 rating. Turbocharged and intercooled, it has a one-piece cylinder head, overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder and electronically controlled unit injectors. It delivers a massive torque of 2100 or 2300 Nm across a broad rev range, providing an extremely responsive unit.

The latest generation Volvo EMS (Engine Management System) featured on the new Volvo D13C ensures optimised combustion, resulting in excellent fuel economy and low particulate emissions. SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) also keeps nitrogen oxide emissions to a very low level. As a result, the new engine is the cleanest, most reliable and fuel efficient ever offered by the company.

The new Volvo D13C engine is an integral part of the Volvo 9700 on display at Euro Bus Expo.

An integral part of this luxury coach’s driveline is the Volvo I-shift, which is lighter, more compact and quieter in operation and features enhanced software. This promotes smoother clutch control at slow speeds and enhanced shift strategy when service brakes are applied momentarily during downhill shifts. Perfectly matched with the single-reduction rear axle, the new engine and Volvo I-Shift transmission deliver first class driveability, outstanding fuel efficiency and low environmental impact.

“Volvo’s continual product development and the introduction of the latest technology across our range of vehicles, means that customers can be sure of operating industry-leading vehicles, which offer significant whole-life cost reductions,” said Ian Downie, Volvo Bus Product Director.
